What is Responsive Website Design?

Right now, about 50% off people are on mobile devices more than desktop. This number is only going up, with the growth of smartphones and tablets, the mobile family is expanding. This means every website needs to be something called "mobile-friendly." A mobile-friendly website has a different layout and design optimized for mobile devices.

It doesn't stop there.

Mobile-Friendly vs. Responsive Web Design

Mobile friendly websites are to responsive websites, as a rectangle is to a square. A responsive website is mobile friendly, although not all mobile friendly websites are responsive. There are two ways of having a mobile friendly website, redirecting to a mobile site, or using a responsive web design. More and more people are moving to responsive website design in CT, as they should.

Redirecting to mobile site

Redirecting to a mobile site, usually gears to only smartphones, and not always all of them. A CT web designer will develop a separate website for mobile devices to access based on the width of the screen. This is done by writing in the code to redirect to another website when the screen is less than e.g. 768 pixels.

A few factors of redirecting to a mobile site:

Pros:

  • Redirecting to a mobile site is easier for a web designer
  • Doesn't take as much education on web design to develop

Cons:

  • Redirecting a site is terrible for SEO.
  • Looks bad on most devices.
  • Doesn't sell your business, makes you look cheap.
  • All different code.
  • Google, and all other search engines see it as a completely different website.
  • Expensive every time you want to update content.
  • Changes to your desktop site don't affect your mobile site, and vise versa.
  • Costs the same or more than getting a responsive site with Volex Design.
  • New website needed for every type of device, e.g. ipads, tablets, smartphones, smartphones sideways.
  • Most redirected mobile sites only come with a site for smartphones

  • Responsive websites are much better for SEO.
  • Responsive sites look great on every device.
  • Promotes your brand well.
  • Search engines recognize it as one website.
  • Free to update content.
  • Changes to the site affects the site on every device
  • Only one website for all devices
  • Responsive web design fits every device, e.g. ipads, tablets, smartphones, smartphones sideways.
  • Costs the same or less than redirected websites

Cons:
